Ask me just about anything…

…and you are sure to get an answer. I love to fill out surveys. I don’t think I’ve ever turned down an opportunity to fill out a survey. Okay, I take that back. When websites interrupt my websurfing with an invitation to participate in a survey, I usually click the X. But other than that, I am all yours. I prefer filling out surveys for social research, but I will do market research surveys too. In fact, I have one setting on my counter right now waiting to be filled out. I like feeling like someone cares about my opinions and experiences and likes and dislikes. And I like seeing how other people construct their surveys, which I of course, I enjoy critiquing even though I don’t really know much about survey construction. On top of being a super-nerd and actually enjoying the process of filling out surveys, part of me feels a bit obliged too. I figure I can’t expect people to participate in my research if I’m unwilling to participate in others’. Maybe it’s about setting a good example (even though no one would ever know) or maybe it’s about karma. Either way, it feels like the right thing to do. Any other social scientists out there share this affinity?

I chewed three pieces of gum today. And it wasn’t just in the privacy of my car. I chewed it while working on the computer at the library and while reading in the faculty/staff lounge and while walking around campus. In total, I may have exceeded three hours of chewing. As far as I know, there’s nothing unhealthy about chewing gum. It’s at least better than other habits like smoking or fingernail biting. Speaking of smoking, I saw a student on campus today smoking a pipe. I’ve never before seen anyone who wasn’t a grandfather smoke a pipe.

We are out of just about everything that is even semi-appropriate for breakfast food. So I went out for bagels this morning while Jon was in the shower. The sun had just come up, the temperature was perfect, and it was nice to be out when the streets are busy with people heading to work. On my way back home I was thinking about how much I like fast-walking. Slow-walking certainly has its place, but not when you’re trying to get somewhere. If I have a real destination and I’m not just out walking, I like to walk like I’m on a mission. And I want other people to do the same. Thinking about this must have jinxed me because I got stuck behind three of the slowest walkers, and of course, they were taking up the entire sidewalk. So I have to slow down and match their pace until I can get to an intersection. So annoying. Anyway, I just saw over at Stats Made Easy that fast-walkers live longer than slow-walkers – apparently as many as 15 years longer. Pretty cool. Of course, Mark gives us the disclaimer that any good statistician would that good health may be driving both the ability to walk fast and the increased longevity.

I really enjoy chewing gum. Especially when I’m in the car by myself driving to and from campus. The privacy of the car lets me chew with my mouth open and smack loud bubbles without annoying others. I find it really relaxing. My favorite kind is Extra Spearmint. Gotta go sugar-free if you’re going to chew it as much as I do.

I love Wheel of Fortune. It’s the only game show I’m even halfway good at. I used to be good at Lingo, but then I took a lengthy break from watching it and when I returned, I sucked. During the school year I don’t get to watch WOF. So I’m catching up now that it’s summer. I’ve been watching it almost every week night. I even signed up for the Wheel Watchers Club. I haven’t won anything yet, but I’m crossing my fingers. I also downloaded a WOF application for my iTouch. It was a fun way to pass the time when I was at the vet’s office yesterday, but it is not nearly as much fun as watching the show on TV. I especially enjoy watching it while I’m running on the treadmill and shouting out my answers for Jon (and anyone else in the workout room) to hear. I am not usually a very competitive person, but I really love solving the puzzles before everyone else. Last night I dreamed about playing WOF. Jon made fun of me, though, because I told him that I’m not sure I was even on the actual game show playing. I think I may have just been “playing” from my couch or on my iTouch. So, yes, even in my dreams I’m apparently not good enough to be on the show. Whatever.

I wouldn’t say that I’m “addicted” to lolcats. It’s not like I would have some sort of withdrawal if I was away from the computer for a few days and couldn’t check them out – as long as I knew I could catch up soon, of course.

Typically, I check them out a few times a day. It’s harmless, though, right?

What’s the worst that can happen? It might cause you to LOL? I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.

I suppose there’s also a risk of embarrassment if you go public with this kind of obsession.

Let’s say you (hypothetical scenario, of course) hang some of your favorite lolcats on your office wall and your students stop by for some exam review. They might see it – along with the framed picture of your own cat on your desk – and remark that you must “really love cats.”

Maybe a little embarrassing, but you can shrug it off with a laugh, change the subject, and make a mental note to take those off the wall ASAP.

That’s probably not enough to earn the label of “crazy cat lady.” If you want to avoid that label, you should probably not tell your students that you also have a favorite lolcat on your computer’s desktop background and that you keep a special folder on your desktop with 66 of your past favorites (examples below) that you may or may not look through from time to time when you need to LOL. Yeah. I wouldn’t tell them, or anyone, about the folder.

Sometimes being a commuter is great. Sometimes I get lost in a great audio book or music or my own thoughts. It’s nice to have some space and time to get ready for the day or to unwind from the day.

But sometimes being a commuter sucks. It can be a bother when I am overwhelmed by work and feel like I barely have time to even sleep or eat or shower.

Regardless of which kind of day I’m having, cruise control is a must. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest inventions. I often forget how great it is. But then I get caught behind someone who either doesn’t have cruise control or isn’t using it, and it forces me to stop using it.

This is a huge pet peeve for me. I get so impatient when I am behind someone who can’t find a constant speed.
