Fighting hunger with flood-tolerant rice

with one comment

Wow. Way to go, Professor Pamela Ronald!

She and her colleagues discovered a flood-resistant gene and were able to introduce it into normal rice varieties. It will give flooded rice plants 17 days of resistance, where previously rice only lasted about 3 days before dying.

How awesome is that?

I know that genetically modified foods are still somewhat controversial, but this could have a big enough impact on the world that I’m not sure you can really argue against it.

  1. A friend of mine shared this news with me today also. I’m very impressed with the level of our technical ability to be able to splice in a single gene to produce the results we want. I think this is very promising for further and bigger achievements in the near future.
