Winter storm causes massive Kentucky outage

leave a comment »

A foot of snow is no fun, but a thick layer of ice is obviously much more devastating.

My family has been without power for days now, and there’s no telling when they’ll get it restored. They live “in the sticks” and are not exactly at the top of the power company’s list.

I remember having to deal without power a few times as a kid during the winters, but it seems like the longest we ever went was three days. I don’t recall it being that bad because we had a wood-burning stove that we could all huddle around. I think more than anything we just had cabin fever.

I suppose my parents enjoy living in a rural area, but now that I have experienced living in more populated areas, I don’t think I could handle it. I would be so impatient in a situation like this.

I have a confession.

Recently, I “unfriended” a bunch of folks on Facebook. Apparently, I’m not the only one.

As an undergrad, I picked up a bunch of “friends” who were really just acquaintances – if that. Some of these friendsĀ I had literally never met in person. We belonged to the same club and knew each other in name only.

So I dropped them. I was tired of seeing status updates for people that I didn’t know. It was just clutter, excess. I trimmed the fat.

It’s not a big deal. They probably didn’t even notice because they don’t know me either. But I felt a strange little twinge of guilt.

Ah, the politics of Facebook…

Fighting hunger with flood-tolerant rice

with one comment

Wow. Way to go, Professor Pamela Ronald!

She and her colleagues discovered a flood-resistant gene and were able to introduce it into normal rice varieties. It will give flooded rice plants 17 days of resistance, where previously rice only lasted about 3 days before dying.

How awesome is that?

I know that genetically modified foods are still somewhat controversial, but this could have a big enough impact on the world that I’m not sure you can really argue against it.
